Fudō Myō-ō (不動明王), also known as Acala in Sanskrit, is a fierce and wrathful deity in Buddhism, particularly in the esoteric traditions like Shingon and Tendai in Japan. The name "Fudō" means "immovable," reflecting his role as a steadfast protector of the Buddhist teachings.
Fudō Myō-ō is often depicted with a fearsome appearance—his face twisted in anger, holding a sword in one hand to cut through ignorance, and a rope in the other to bind evil forces. He is typically surrounded by flames, symbolizing the burning away of impurities and the power of his wrathful compassion.
In esoteric Buddhism, Fudō Myō-ō is considered one of the Five Wisdom Kings (五大明王), who serve as protectors of the Buddha and the Dharma. Despite his intimidating appearance, he embodies the compassionate force that helps devotees overcome obstacles on their spiritual path.
